課程概述

Course Description:
This course is designed to foster the understanding of European drama and theatrical culture(s) from antiquity to the twentieth century. Students will learn the necessary analytical skills for close reading as well as the knowledge of theatrical developments, generic fashion, and theatre practice. The course will follow a chronological model, beginning with Greek tragedy and concluding with modern drama. Six subgenres of drama from the classical period, the Renaissance, the Jacobean period, the Restoration, the eighteenth century, as well as the twentieth century are selected to ensure that students be equipped with fundamental knowledge about theatre across historical, ideological and technical divides.

Course Objectives:
Students will learn knowledge concerning
1. Major developments of theatre from antiquity to modernity
2. Structure of playhouses: Greek amphitheater, the Globe, the proscenium stage, the yard, and the pit.
3. The dynamic culture of theatre and the printing houses. Formats of drama publication. Folios, quartos, and octavos.
4. Performance history.
5. Realism, Naturalism, Symbolism, Expressionism, and Epic Theatre.

Attendance Policy: Student can request leave permission via “Student Leave Management” available from NTU Cool, either prior to or after his/her absence. If you need to leave early, please also contact the instructor in advance. Unapproved early dismissals will occasion detriment to your attendance rate. Students should also contact our course TA for record keeping purposes. Each student is allowed two absences throughout the semester without point deductions. Absences of (or more than) five times will result in the failure of this course.

Grading:
Attendance (weekly quizzes) & Discussion: 20% (5 times of absence = F)
Reading materials for weekly quizzes will be available via NTU Cool.
Project/Report: 20%
Please choose from the following topics:
1. Produce a solo performance or work of art (a drama performance, a recital of famous soliloquies, a song written by you, a podcast, a group interview, props, paintings or crafts… etc.) of or related to a play written by Sophocles, Shakespeare, Sheridan, or Brecht. Be creative. Upload your video or artwork to NTU Cool. This performance should be at least 10-15 minutes long. If you are working as a group, please produce a performance of at least 30 minutes. Artworks (photoed or scanned as images) should be at least three A4 pages long.
2. Go to the “Asian Shakespeare Intercultural Archive” (http://a-s-i-a-web.org/index.php) or “Taiwan Shakespeare Database” and view a play of your choice. Write an essay of 1,000 words in English (or 2,000 words in Chinese). Your essay must answer at least one of the following interrelated questions: 1. Why do directors make Shakespeare intercultural? 2. What are the functions/meanings of Asian backdrops and Asian elements in intercultural Shakespearean performances. 3. What are the drawbacks of Asian backdrops/elements in intercultural Shakespeare performances? 4. Are intercultural Shakespeare performances truly “Shakespearean”? 5. What qualifies a performance of Shakespearean plays as “intercultural”?

Midterm: 25 %
Final: 25 %

Course Policies:
Late-submission: Any assignments submitted later than the deadline will receive a 30% deduction and must be re-submitted within three working days after the deadline.
Make-up exams: Make-up exams are not permitted. If your absence on the exam day is due to medical reasons, extenuating circumstances, or an official leave, you should produce relevant supporting documents such as a medical diagnosis by a physician. Make-up exams will be administered with a partially different version of the official exam paper and should be done no later than one week after the designated exam date.
Plagiarism: Using others’ works, sentences, or ideas as your own without proper acknowledgement or citation will be viewed as plagiarism. Failures to give credit to the materials you use in essay questions, projects, or drama review will result in a score of zero for that assignment. If plagiarism is noted multiple times, the depart office will be contacted for further action.
Cheating: Cheating will result in the failure of this course.
